SCHOLARSHIP QUALIFICATIONS

Hawaii resident
-
Graduating high school students, or undergraduate college student in good standing at public, charter school or institutions of higher learning in the State of Hawaii
-
Grade point average of 2.8 or better
-
Area of study in Polynesian culture, language, practices or customs or other traditional Polynesian study field that perpetuates culture
-
Applicant may be asked to provide verification on requirement for financial assistance.
APPLICATION PROCESS

Submit application package by 12 Noon (Hawaii standard time) on February 29, 2008. Documents will not be returned so it is recommended that you make and retain a copy of all documents for your files.

Application form(s), completed, signed

Most current high school or college transcripts, showing grade point average and good standing
-
Statement of family’s financial situation
-
2 letters of recommendation (one from a current or former teacher/instructor and one from a community member – neither can be a family member)

A personal two page letter from the applicant which includes 1) your reason(s) for studying Polynesian culture, language, traditions, customs or practices and 2) why you believe Uncle Kawika is an exceptional role model for students

Signed media release form authorizing Kalehua Productions LLC to publish scholarship recipient’s photo and a press release regarding the scholarship award in various media venues

Available for the actual award presentation during the “We Are Polynesia – This Is Our Story” concert on August 16, 2008.

Applications will be reviewed and all eligible candidates will be scheduled for a personal interview with the David Kawika Kapahulehua Scholarship committee during the week of spring break (March 17-28, 2008).

Arrangements for interviews with neighbor island finalists will be determined at the time of the selection.

The scholarship recipient will be selected by April 18, 2008 and notified soon thereafter.

Kalehua Productions, LLC representative are available to present the scholarship at the awards program at the recipient’s school.

Kalehua Productions, LLC will announce the scholarship award in press releases to the media and arrange for the recipient to be a guest at the “We Are Polynesia – Our Story” concert in September 2008 at the Waikiki Shell. Presentation of the actual monetary award will be made at this concert.
